Mexico City - Location
Location: Distrito Federal
Mexico City, the Federal District and Mexico's capital, is one of the largest and most complex cities in the world. Its combination of history, culture, and entertainement makes it an extremely attractive city. Architectural traces of its pre-Hispanic and vice-regal past are interspersed with modern buildings. Mexico City's origins date from 1325, when the Mexica discovered the central islet in Texcoco Lake. They settled this area and founded a powerful empire, which was eventually defeated by the Spanish conqueror, Hernán Cortés. The colonial period in Mexico produced so many magnificent churches, monasteries and palaces that Mexico City came to be known as the "city of palaces." Locals refer to the city as simply México or D.F., and it has an extremely complete infrastructure, with air and overland links to everywhere in the country. It is also filled with hotels, restaurants, amusement centers, cinemas, theaters, and dozens of museums - including the world famous Museum of Anthropology.
Modern day Mexico City is characterized by magnificent skyscrapers, a wealth of colonial buildings and remnants of the Aztec culture. There are also plenty of possibilities for those who want to get away from the city and enjoy nature. You can visit the volcanic mountains in the south that form part of the National Parks and Ecological Reserves. To the east, the traveler can admire the snow-capped volcanoes of Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl.
The area in which the school is located is known as Colonia Condesa. This is one of the most traditional and central areas in the city. This peaceful neighborhood has recently become an important center for culture, entertainment, and fashion. For more information on the area, see www.coloniacondesa.com.mx.
