With delightfully mild temperatures and dry weather most of the year, Santiago offers a great climate in the economic heart of Chile. This city of five million residents is one of the few capitals in the world with easy access to both ski slopes (about thirty miles) and beaches (about sixty miles). A bustling atmosphere and a vital business district can be found among the skyscrapers of modern Santiago. The historical district lies at the heart of the city, and beautifully landscaped parks add green spaces. On Sundays, people gather in the colorful gardens of the Plaza de Armas to listen to music from the bandstand and watch the street performers. High culture is readily available in Santiago, from museums and galleries to the incredible mix of colonial and modern architecture. Theater and music are a big part of the social scene in Santiago, and the city hosts several festivals each year. The nearby wineries are an additional treat to explore.
