Oaxaca City - Location
OAXACA CITY
Oaxaca, which is the capital of the state of the same name, is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains about 500 km. south of Mexico City. It has a very pleasant mountainous climate throughout the year.
The city has been nominated a World Heritage Site because of its magnificent colonial architecture. In the area there are many archaeological sites which were important cities in the past, Monte Albán and Mitla. They were built by the Mixtec and Zapotec cultures which achieved a high level of artistic development.
Oaxaca is one of the most indigenous states of Mexico and has a large and diverse population. Even today you will see beautiful handicrafts and colorful dress, and also hear native languages in addition to Spanish. The city is located 45 minutes by air from Mexico City and five to six hours by first class direct buses.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Becari is convinced that to really master Spanish you need to understand the cultural and historical aspects of Latin America and Mexico. For this reason there are many additional opportunities to learn about prehispanic culture, history, literature and politics. There are special workshops that include classes in folkloric dancing, Mexican cooking, ceramics and weaving, as well as art lectures and films. Many of these activities are free.
Every Wednesday afternoon there is a free cultural event with local specialists. Every Friday afternoon Mexican movies are shown. It is also possible to arrange an "intercambio" with a local Oaxacan student who is learning English, and this can be done even on a daily basis.
For reasonable fees you can join a cooking class every Monday and Friday. Ceramic classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as weaving.
Salsa dance classes are offered on Wednesdays. There are numerous social activities. On weekends there are more extended optional trips at reasonable costs so that you can explore the surrounding areas of Oaxaca. There is an orientation session on Mondays at 1:00pm with an introduction trip to the downtown area of Oaxaca.
