Cuernavaca - Frequently Asked Questions

Will it cost less if I register directly with Mexico rather than through the U.S. office Language Link?

No, the cost is the same. Our advantage is faster and easier communication through our toll free number.

How much notice do you need to enroll?

A three week+ notice is helpful. More time may be needed in December, January, May, June and July. There is often a waiting list in these months. At other times, we can usually handle a rush reservation.

When can I start classes?

You can begin classes on any Monday. Students stay from one to 24 weeks. Use your time and money well and stay as long as possible.

If I know no Spanish at all, how will I survive?

The orientation is in English, and most of the staff speak English. Most of the families have at least one family member who will understand English. There are usually many beginners at the school.

What will my classes be like?

Your small group class (5 students maximum, sometimes fewer) will be very conversational in approach. You will learn Spanish by actively speaking it.

Will I have any privacy if I live with a Mexican family?

Yes, particularly if you have a private room. You will be given a key to the house and can come and go as you like.

What about my travel arrangements?

Call or contact our resources to get the best airfare for a flight into Mexico City (Sunday arrival is best). Once there, you can take the frequent public buses to Cuernavaca or we can arrange a private driver to pick you up at the airport. The driver will meet your flight holding a sign with your name. Cost for this service is $90 per car (two people capacity).

When is the best time of year to study?

The weather is great year round. Due to the altitude, it is never overly hot. The school is less crowded in the fall and February through April.

What are the ages of the students?

The age range is quite wide -- from 18 to 80 plus. Mature students report good experiences, and there are always enough younger students to make up classes and outings with those of a similar age. Children under 18 may come only when accompanied by an adult, and they will be taught on a separate campus. The only exception are students of ages 16 and 17, who may come unaccompanied if they are mature, responsible, and do not need special organized activities or constant supervision. They will be required to have a curfew.

How does the school address health concerns?

The orientation will include medical information. A doctor is available daily at reasonable cost. Your Mexican family will provide bottled water and purified fruits and vegetables.

When should I arrive and leave?

Plan to arrive on a Sunday, as your orientation will be the next morning. At this time you will be given an oral and written placement exam, as well as general information. Your departure plans should be made for either Saturday or Sunday after ending classes.

How will I get around in Cuernavaca?

Your family will take you to and from school if you are not within walking distance. Taxis and buses for other trips are inexpensive and widely available.

What should I bring with me?

When you enroll we will send you a guide book and travel advice.

What extra costs are involved?

Books will be about $15. Optional excursions are priced from $22-$30. Return airport transportation will range from $12 (public bus) to $45 (shared school taxi). Other costs would be extra transportation, optional meals, and drinks out.
