Cuernavaca - Teen Program
TEEN AND CHILDREN'S PROGRAM FOR SPANISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE OF CUERNAVACA, MEXICO
This is not an organized teen program with special activities, but younger students are grouped together for classes on a separate campus. The program is best for students traveling with parents or for very independent teens who do not need or want organized activities with students of their same age.
Students aged 16 or 17 may come unaccompanied, but they must be very mature and responsible and adhere to curfew rules set by the school. Other ages must be accompanied by a parent, relative or guardian who is studying in the program on the main campus.
The attractive colonial style facilities are located in a residential area of Cuernavaca, Mexico. Located in the mountains, 1.5 hours away from the capital Mexico City, Cuernavaca is known as the city of "Eternal Spring" due to its 75 degree year round temperature. This city of about 500,000 inhabitants and at an altitude of 5,000 feet, is perhaps one of the best places in the world to study Spanish. Its abundant art, archaeology zones and colonial style make it a pleasure to explore the Mexican culture. Students fly into Mexico City on a Sunday(orientation on Monday) and depart on a Saturday or Sunday. Airport pickup is required for teens traveling alone.
THE SCHOOL AND CAMPUS Classes take place on a special campus, a few blocks away from the main campus. However, classes may be held on the main campus if number of participants is small.
THE COURSE Students are grouped into courses according to their Spanish levels. There are five students maximum per group, with conversation classes slightly larger. Classes are six hours per day of group courses, 9am to 3pm, divided in to grammar/vocabulary, conversation, and active learning methods.
ACCOMMODATION This program provides accommodation with host families.
Family Stay: Mexican families are the best way for you to practice your Spanish as well as have a full cultural experience. Our families are specially chosen because they have experience with teenagers and like receiving them into their families. When possible, the school tries to place a teen with a family with similarly aged Mexican teens. Students may be housed in double rooms with a roommate assigned or in a private room. Breakfast and lunch (the main meal) are included in the family stay, and families do enforce set curfews for minor students. Airport pickup and return is NOT included in your accommodation cost. Airport pickup is mandatory for a minor if traveling alone and is $90 one way for one or two persons traveling together. Please see Travel and Arrival Info for more information.
ACTIVITIES The regular program of the Institute includes optional excursions during the week and on weekends. Teen students may join these excursions at the regular fees. These excursions average about $25 and are to places such as Taxco and Teotihuacán.
TYPICAL SCHEDULE - Classes are held 9am to 3pm Monday through Friday, with additional activities during the week and excursions on the weekends with the regular student population of the school. The teen student will have frequent unsupervised or unaccompanied periods of time, when he must operate independently and responsibly.
TYPICAL EXCURSIONS - Mexico D.F. (the capital, 1.5 hours away) including the world-class Museum of Anthropology, Taxco (picturesque silver city), Tepoztlán (the Temple of Tepozteco), Xochimilco (floating gardens), the pyramids of Teotihuacán, archaeological zone of Xochicalco.
TRAVEL & ARRIVAL Students should arrange to fly into Mexico City on a Sunday. Airport pickup and return is NOT included in the program cost, but it is required.
